State and Federal Laws Pertaining to Civil Commitment

Disclaimer: This site is intended for general public information only. Information on this site should not be considered an alternative for medical or legal professional advice for specific or personal cases.

The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 authorized the federal government to institute a civil commitment program for federal sex offenders (42 USC 16971).

In addition, up to 20 States have enacted some form of Civil Commitment legislation to enforce indefinite confinement of individuals who have completed a period of conviction for committing a sexual offense.

Because legislation is changed on a regular basis, the information provided below should be verified as to accuracy. Our intention in posting this information is to provide a starting point for discovering your States statutes regarding Civil Confinement.

The National District Attorneys Association (NDAA.org) through it's National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse (NCPCA) has published several compilations of State statutes regarding Civil Commitment.
