About
Sex Offenders Restored through Treatment (SORT) was organized by Mr. Loren Perry, a recovering sex offender, in Lansing, MI, in September, 1990, as an issue chapter of Citizens United for the Rehabilitation of Errants (National CURE), located in Washington, DC.
In October 1993, SORT moved its operations to Baltimore, MD, under the leadership of Mr. Wayne Bowers, also a recovering sex offender, after he and Mr. Perry had met at a couple of CURE conventions and realized the need to develop a wider coverage.
In August 1996, operations were moved to Okemos, MI, where Mr. Bowers and Mr. Perry merged their efforts to promote needs for viable therapy and prevention.
Sex Abuse Treatment Alliance (SATA) was founded in 1995 by Mr. Perry, who realized the need to care for those who have been harmed, for those who did the harming, and for their families and communities. It became a private, not for profit 501 (c) (3) organization in 1996, with plans to continue workshops he had been sponsoring with national organizations on the success and reliability of therapy for a person who has sexually offended.
Mr. Perry became ill with cancer in late 1996 and passed away in February, 1997. Mr. Bowers assumed directorship of both organizations and SORT became a subsidiary program of SATA in 1999.
In 2007 the operation moved to Milwaukee, WI, under the directorship of Board members Bob and Pam Brown as Mr. Bowers moved to Oklahoma for family reasons. He remained on the Board and assumed directorship of SORT again in March 2009 and became President of the Board of SATA.
In late 2012, the operations moved to Norman, OK. With the move to Oklahoma, the Board of SATA decided to rename the organization to CURE-SORT to more adequately reflect its role as an issues chapter of National CURE. On May 7, 2013 the organizational name SATA was changed to CURE-SORT as a reflection of this action.
Interested participants come from across the United States and include all those wishing to prevent inappropriate and illegal sexual behavior through a meaningful, healing, therapeutic approach.
